Description
Kalle Lampela (born 1973) defended his doctoral dissertation at the University of Lapland’s Faculty of Art and Design in 2012. In his dissertation, Lampela combines a visual arts perspective with a sociological research perspective. The themes of his works are loosely related to political history and utopias. The main techniques used by Lampela are drawing and collage. A conceptual and investigative orientation is characteristic of his work.
The Portrait of Raimo Väyrynen departs from conventional portrait painting in that the model is depicted in a larger than life-size. In addition, it is a crayon portrait that has been created using colored pencil techniques to achieve photorealism, a process where Lampela has combined the genre of traditional portrait painting – which aims to achieve a likeness of the model – and the opportunities offered by digital technologies, such as using and projecting digital photographs, and using a computer in creating artworks.
Kalle Lampela has been working in the University of Lapland’s Faculty of Art and Design as a researcher, a university lecturer in visual arts, and as an Associate Professor.
