Kari Huhtamo: Ritenuto I

Steel relief Ritenuto I is an excellent example of the technical, material, and aesthetical economy of Kari Huhtamo’s art. It encompasses modernist architect Mies van der Rohe’s famous words: Less is more. Though Ritenuto I is welded together using many seamlessly fitting pieces, it looks like a single sheet of metal, cut and folded. The result, all the shining mirror surfaces that keep changing as the viewer moves around, is considerably greater than the sum of its parts.

Kari Huhtamo’s sculptures frequently contain references to classical music. Ritenuto is a musical term meaning temporary decrease in tempo for dramatic effect.
