Description

Flamma Artis, the Flame of the Arts, is a typical mobile for Kari Huhtamo, suspended and floating in space. The wing-like arcs composed around a vertical axis create a constantly shifting impression as your viewing angle and the angle of light shining on the work change. The bright metal surface reflects the surrounding architecture and everything going on within it, whereas the holes in the wing-like surfaces yield transparency that lightens the visual image and enriches the viewing experience.

The conceptual starting point of this mobile, familiar from many myths, is the flame symbolising the fire that sustains the soul or life itself – an appropriate conceptual frame for a work located right in the middle of the Faculty of Art and Design of the University of Lapland.
