Description
Fruits II and its sister sculpture Fruits I represent a distinct genre in Kari Huhtamo’s practice. The sculptures are not attached to ground, wall or base, but, instead, they hang on wires, slowly turning in currents of air. This unusual way of presentation is a likely inspiration for their titles, as well. The Fruit sculptures create an impression of a giant fruit or nut discovered by Huhtamo’s rich imagination on another planet, in a world where stainless steel replaces chlorophyll and flowers bloom forever.
The vertical cuts make Fruits II more free-flowing than its sister. The simple form is based on cutting and folding a thin steel sheet so that a two-dimensional surface unfolds into a breathing and voluminous space.
