Description
By the end of the 1990’s, computer-controlled laser cutters were accurate enough to make sophisticated details, finely shaped apertures and cuts. As you can see in many Kari Huhtamo’s sculptures on display in the University of Lapland, Rovaniemi, he was quick to realize the possibilities made available by the new technology and started to apply them in his artistic expression.
Echoes from the Forest is a rare work in Kari Huhtamo’s oeuvre. Entirely two-dimensional, it derives its meaning from the interaction between indoors and outside: the mirror image in the front side of the steel sheet blends with the light shining through the cuttings in the sheet. The undulating cuttings extending from the centre of the sculpture towards the edges call to mind graphical representations of sound waves and also concentric circles made by a stone thrown in water.
