Description
When Kari Huhtamo started making art with a computer in the mid-1980’s, the new technology introduced several new features into his art. Most obvious was the accuracy of a computer-controlled laser cutter, which is greatly superior to hand tools. Another interesting aspect is the size and scale of his sculptures. Computer programs allow the sculptor to try out the measurements of a sculpture and examine its rapport with its final location before it is finished. In addition, the sculptor can use computer programs to “print” versions of his works in various sizes. One of many examples is the Big Yellow Medal, which Huhtamo has turned into a medal you can hold in your hand, as well as a large sculpture with a diameter of 1.5 metres.
The execution of the medal represents the characteristic economy of Huhtamo’s artistic practice. Though it is easy to understand that a form detached from a circular steel sheet is simply rotated 90 degrees around its axle, the end result is greater than the sum of it parts.
